.. so I can actually get 1 -2 of the rental tanks I have really enjoyed. I noticed there was a bundle of a Panzer 4 Schmalturm and some gold. I was curious of what y'all thought of the tank. Is it a good deal? How newbie friendly is it? Thanks.

Um if you like bad tanks go for it.  It is a tier five tank with tier six match making.

Pz4S is a turreted TD, not MT.

Imagine Stug with 75/L70, but in turret.

I love mine, and when played to its strengths it is very good. However I would not advise it for beginner, as its not easiest tank around.

Instead I'd suggest some flavor of T-34-85, easy to drive and quite strong. If I am not mistaken M model is strongest, but Rudy is best bang for buck as it comes with two 0-skill crews.

Speaking of 0-skill crew... Its much better purchase than tank itself as 0skill crew halves crew training time.

Snatching tank that comes with BiA is best bang for buck. Rudy, Cromwell B, Tiger 131, Berlin IS and ISU, Thunderbolt, and so on.

Well the money is yours, youre the one who choose where to spend it but id wait till christmas boxes (tbh i AM waiting for the boxes, wont spend a penny til then).

I did this strategy last year and it worked well for me (the numbers arent too much accurate as i dont remember anymore); bought 150 christmas boxes. (will buy 225/300 this year)

Got in return 4 premium tanks (tier 8), a bunch of other low tier premium tanks that i really dont care (sold some of them for credits). (Thats 40k+ gold worth on prem tanks)

Got aswell 45k+ gold, 15m+ credits, a lot of 3d camos and 200ish days of premium time.

That means i spent 150 dollares and recieved A LOT MORE in return and kept me confortable for the whole year (after prem ran out, i took breaks or bought packs of 30days prem + low tier prem tanks (to have more barrack slot))

If you can hold out it's probably worth waiting until Christmas when you can buy boxes which will give you gold plus goodies.

Sadly must agree about the Pz IV S. It's just sloooooooooow.

One of my favorite tanks but I have a habit of liking bad tanks. It is hard to play an do well in. But a turbo has helped its mobility a bit.

As much as I like a challenge, it sounds like a hit or miss for me. Right now I have the SU-122, Eagle 7, T34-85M, and KV-122 as rentals. Had a lot of luck with the KV, and 34, so far. So leaning that way. I have not driven the Eagle, only a couple times in SU. A TD seems to mesh well for me, though I am favoring mediums atm.

With peculiar, situational, tanks its generally good to play rental before purchasing :]

I could be wrong, but, as far as I can tell, a 0 skill crew is one that has training at 100% and no skill points. Thus you do not have to train them up before learning a skill ( camo, repair, etc..). I am sure someone more knowledgeable than myself can give a more definitive answer.

Crew training is not linear. Each skill takes twice as much xp as previous did.

Exact implementation is overcomplicated because XP per % is not linear as well, but more or less it boils down to total XP to reach n'th skill:

Normal crew = 210064*(2n - 1)

0skill crew = 210064*(2(n-1) - 1)

skill normal crew 0 skill crew normal total 0skill total %
1 210064 0 210064 0 0%
2 420128 210064 630192 210064 33%
3 840256 420128 1470448 630192 43%
4 1680512 840256 3150960 1470448 47%
5 3361024 1680512 6511984 3150960 48%
6 6722048 3361024 13234032 6511984 49%
7 13444096 6722048 26678128 13234032 50%
8 26888192 13444096 53566320 26678128 50%
9 53776384 26888192 107342704 53566320 50%
10 107552768 53776384 214895472 107342704 50%

Once you get few skills you can remove that -1 from equation because its just difference of meager 210k XP, so ignoring that tiny rounding error formulas will be:

Normal crew = 210064*(2n)

0skill crew = 210064*(2(n - 1)) = 210064*(2n)/2 = Normal Crew / 2

Total xp halved => Training halved.

Question: when it is worthy to replace multi-skill crew with 0skill crew? Before you reach 3'rd skill.
It will literally take less XP (about 210k less) to grind from 0 to n'th skill than it will take to get n'th skill alone on normal crew.
210k is a lot for first few skills, but later on one percent will take more. You'd probably lose that advantage by playing with unskilled crew.

You do not need to do math yourself (or abuse Excel, like I did) because handy calculators exist: http://www.planetwot.com/Crewxp/

(I ignored crew basic qualification, because 0skill crew makes no difference here. It will take less than 100k to train crew to 100% so its just marginal difference once you start talking about millions of xp)

If you want to know why 0skill is much better purchase than premium tank, then math can solve that as well:
Grinding n skills with normal crew in normal tank will take x xp.
As explained above, 0skill crew will take x/2.
Premium tank gives +50% crew xp. Ignoring ACT (small difference for large crews) it boils down to x*2/3.
In meantime 0skill crew in normal tank will still require x/2 = x*1/2 = x*3/6 which is less than x*2/3 = x*4/6. It might be meager 16% difference, but it means you can grind tech tree while training crew faster than normal one in premtank.

You do not buy tank with free 0skill crew. You buy 0skill crew with free tank.
For example I have bought Cromwell B four or five times, to put 0skill crew in most of UK lines. I have bought many such crew+tank bundles for other nations, many never played simply because 0skill crew is immense saving of time.

One last question. How do I identify such tanks/ crews? I believe the Fury crew I bought on xbox had a skill, but the console version is remarkably different, especially with skills/crew. I'd like crews for US, Russian and German mediums, but didn't see anything like this.

They will tell you when you buy it.  The Berlin tanks all have it, Rudy, ISU-122S, Thunderbolt, IS-2, and the Tiger 131 also does. I've also bought some of these quite a few times just for the crews which I put in other tanks.

The Schmalturm is not newby friendly but is a real fun tank with a good crew and played more like a turreted TD as PTwr mentioned.  I really enjoy it.

Edit: I use a turbo on it and the speed is not that bad.

TLDR version is "0skill crew halves crew training time". I believe thats all we need to know to appreciate value of those crews.

Usually its explicitly stated as "0 skill BiA crew". Sometimes "0 skill" part is omitted, which is a problem because sometimes they sell tank with normal crew that just comes with first skill already trained.

Best way is to check on forum, usually some peps ask then other peps post screenshots after purchasing that confirm it either way.

For example in recent Rudy offer its stated explicitly:

For US I believe only T42 and Thudnerbolt give 0skill crews. For Germany its even worse, with only Tiger 131. For mother russia you get two "Berlin tanks", IS and ISU (both have white cross painted on top), and Rudy which comes with two crews, RU and PL.

For UK we only got Cromwell B, for Poland its just Rudy, for France/Check/Japan/China/Sweeden/Italy its just nothing. However you can still obtain 0skill crew from Marathon, or just build one from girls.

Once you have them in garage you can either check xp needed to reach next %, but its unreliable, or check via skill reset:

You can't drop BiA on 0skill crew, so its not included in perks counter:

as opposed to normal crew:

(make sure to select gold reset, to not get errors from xp loss)
