The 6.7 patch brought many changes, but none perhaps so significant as the introduction of the Type 59. The T-59 has emerged as the top moneymaker next to the lowe, and one of the strongest premium tanks in the game. The Type 59 has been so popular, its one of the most common tanks these days.

A typical pug match.

The Type 59 is something of a mystery, as opinion varies greatly on this tank. This guide is to help you learn to play your Type 59...and to kill it.

BATTLEFIELD ROLE:

The Type 59 looks like a T-54, so many people treat it as one. Statistically, its much more similar to a T-44...and imo, it plays a different role on the battlefield than either.  The T-54 is best used as a scout, using its superior agility/speed/viewing range/camo/survivability to light up targets and when required help kill them. The T-44 is a dogfighter, using its speed and profile to flank attack and exploit breakthroughs.

A type 59 cleverly disguised as one of the boats on Fishing Bay. Its practically invisible!

In my opinion, the Type 59 is neither of those. The T-59 is an inferior scout because of its relatively poor view range and radio. Likewise, its not the best dogfighter because of its poor agility. However, thanks in large part to matchmaking (the Type 59 never plays against t10 tanks, t9 mediums, or t8 arty meaning its always one of the top mediums on the field AND deadly to anything on the field), the T-59 makes an excellent assault tank. Using your speed, firepower, and armor, you can easily bully lesser tanks and flank/wolfpack larger ones. This means the T-59 is almost always one of the most significant tanks in the game.

So this is the first lesson -- play your Type 59 not as a scout, not as a sniper, not as a dogfighter, but as a wolfpacking, brawling assault tank.

SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT:

Accordingly, the best equipment is vertical stabilizer / rammer / vents. Ammo choice varies, but I believe 8 rounds of HE is sufficient for fighting hulled down tanks or t9s. Running out of ammo is a real concern tho, so don't just waste shots. The gun is accurate enough and penetrates well enough to have a big impact, and anyone who has played russian has a lot of experience with similar weaponry.

My loader, Phat Hoa, busy at work.

Gas or a removed governor is also highly recommended. The tank will never be quick, but it helps a great deal.

USING AND ABUSING THE TYPE 59's ARMOR:

The central feature of the Type 59 is its massive armor. The Type 59 is extremely difficult to penetrate in the front and turret, meaning direct charges or face hugging work extremely well. Many lesser tanks will find you almost invincible, and with good angling and movement even t8 tanks will struggle. Arty...well...

Type 59 demonstrating its anti-nuclear plating, as commonly used in world war 2.

One big flaw of the Type 59 is the risk of explosion. To reduce your chance of getting ammo racked, always face your gun at your opponent (don't swing your head around to the side). Keep this in mind while driving, if you can handle not looking in the direction you are driving. If you get hit and take ammo damage, instantly repair it (even if you are on fire). This returns the modules HP to full and significantly reduces the risk of the next hit blowing you up or blowing up before the fire is out.

But BEWARE! Your Type 59 is not unstoppable!

The Type 59 has weaknesses, however. Its sides and butt are very weak. Its low profile makes it difficult to hit, but makes it prone to track shots. Finally, even in the front its gun is prone to breaking or exploding, so even small targets can hurt you a great deal with module damage. The sides of the turret are also somewhat weak, and prone to explosion if penetrated. Act accordingly -- a Type 59 is stronger fighting head on than trying to dogfight!

CONCLUSION:

Right now, the Type 59 is debatably the best tank in the game. Decent firepower, excellent armor, excellent credit making, and superior matchmaking combine for an outstanding tank -- and one that's very fun to play. Although it will certainly be nerfed according to the matchmaker soon, until then....

They need to give us a trade premium tanks day. I'd give up my Lowe for one in a heartbeat.

I hate em' because I dont have one.. definately a force to be reckoned with in the matches they get... good speed, hard to hit and hard to hurt,,, packs a punch,, if you have 2 or more of them swarming you you pretty much are toast

It is NEVER a good idea to split your skills across the crew. Start with Repair for everyone, then firefighting or camo once they're at 100% on Repair.

They should give it the same matchmaking as the other tier 8 mediums, then it should be fine. The problem now is unlike most tier 8s it will never see tier 10s. Almost all tier 8s are OP when at the top and effective when there are only a couple 9s a side. With 10s around they can be easily neutralized.

couldn't agree more with his perfectly sarcastic slam in this caption to one of his pics:  "Type 59 demonstrating its anti-nuclear plating, as commonly used in world war 2."

Not that I mind any of the tanks included in the game, but I see alot of people bitching that this isn't their idea of a WW2 tank simulation game...I can just imagine the chuckles this quote will cause.

No contest I would take that trade. Bought mine for cheap hours before they hit $50 out of impulse and regret it to this day. My stats in it are decent, and it's made me atleast 2 million credits playing it alone, but I just don't really like heavy tanks.

Type 59's are actually inferior to both t44's and t54's - they have decent armor, but thats it

they are slugguish and poorly armed for thier tier.

That said they are a pain in the backside when they wolf pack and an experienced player can explit the armour they have to be mostly un-hittable

best tactic is to eitehr take advantage of thier ammo rack issue or just track em and leave em for arty/TD's

What you dont want to do is make the mistake of treating them as a T54-lite they are fast enough to draw a heavy tank out of cover and into arty fire easily.

Wait for them to come to you and then nail them.

They havent the speed of a 44 or the agility of a Pershing to get past you easily so this is the main factor you need to exploit when playing against them

It is NEVER a good idea to split your skills across the crew.

I think i've missed something on the whole crew training - but wouldn't splitting the skills just give you more of a spread of slightly improved abilities, rather than a bigger improvement in one ability? I don't get why that would never be a good idea?

Simple 4 crew example - all four 100% in one ability - avg for tank 100%
2 and 2 at 100%, avg for tank 50% and 50%.

Or have i read something wrong?

Anyway, re the OP - makes the forums worth visiting. Amazing how prophetic someone was when they suggested a day or two ago that Garbad only creates his 'how to's to balance out the rest of the negative reps he gets. Funny stuff!
