Yeah, I think DerViktim must have overlooked something.

The 75 was substantially lighter, a much better fit inside the small turret of the M4, and had a higher rate of fire and a better HE round. The 3" was worse in all those criteria, but had a substantially better armor-penetration capability.

Why did they put such a small turret on the M4?

I don't think it was an unreasonable size.  They were able to put the 76mm, the 105mm, and the 17 pounder guns in it.  That is better than the record with British tanks.

Apropos of absolutely nothing, my sister is a DJ, and has played quite a few countries. She's currently live-streaming.

Not really my type of music, but I'm always happy to give her a plug. https://www.facebook...42870475877496/

Fortunately, I just saw David Willey's appearance on Military History Visualised just before I leave Bovington. I need to track him down..

Of all the ww2 tanks you've gotten to climb around in, which would you want to ride into battle as a ww2 tanker?

ETA: And would there be any differences in your choice if you were something other than the TC?

Merry Christmas, Chief, :) ...and Merry Christmas everyone!

Hey Chief, I remember you posting something a while back on this thread about classic folk songs, so I figured I'd share a personal favourite of mine. Not sure if you've ever heard this old one, but it hails from your neck of the woods. It's a very old folk song that dates back even before my time {yes, it's that old!}. Take a few minutes, when you get a chance, and pay close attention to the words of this song. A very interesting story will unfold.

^..A wonderful recording of a very old Irish folk song...

A question for The Chieftain here:

Where did you get your hat (cavalry stetson) from?

It's the middle of summer here, and I'm looking to buy the same brand or a look-a-like as a sunhat. Can you recommend me a good retalier for your stetson? Please, you have to help me. The alternative is that I have to get the sunhats at my local store and I'd rather die of melanoma before I get caught wearing one of them:

So I've been rooting around my garage, and found a bunch of old games I've not played in years, if at all. For example, I seem to have completely forgotten I have Silent Hunter IV. (I was debating firing up III when I came across it).

Amongst other things I found were Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, and LO-MAC. I kindof got out of my flight-sim kick before DCS came along. I note that F4.0 is still being improved by the (quite impressive) Benchmark Sims. I do recall enjoying F4, particularly the campaign. If I had to pick the time for just one, would I go with F4 AF, figure out BMS, go with LO-MAC FC2, or just say to heck with it and go DCS?

I have all those great games but can't get them to run on anything but the earlier versions of windows, even in compatibility mode. A lot have great user mods like silent hunter too. I also have Tiger vs T-34 which is one heck of a actual tank simulator and the ai tanks are very good. That doesn't work either. :(

^..Sounds like a cool game...

Too bad they didn't create a modern/updated version of that tank simulator game. I'd play it. Especially if it involves some good old fashioned "Atari style" AI bot tanks. As long as they're smarter than the ones in our Proving Grounds...:D No offense, 'El Nath'.

5. Speak Not of the Apricot  Apricots are not allowed on, near, about, or within a one-mile radius of American tanks. Even the word "apricrot" is forbidden. It's a superstitious tradition that started in WWII with the U.S. Marine Amtracks.

Can you explain this one to me?  I dont understand it.
