That’s the short version, but for more information about APA! and why we’re doing this fundraiser, please read on! Otherwise we hope to see you there next week!

WHY ARE WE RAISING FUNDS FOR AUSTIN PETS ALIVE! (APA!)?

Every day, countless animals that could otherwise live perfectly happy, healthy lives are euthanized unnecessarily due to totally treatable medical conditions. Things like parvovirus, Feline Leukemia, heartworm, ringworm, behavioral issues, and more equal a death sentence for many animals in most parts of the country- but fortunately for those in the Austin, TX area there is a second chance thanks to Austin Pets Alive!- and their Medical Triage and Wellness Clinic is a key part of those lifesaving efforts.

Yes, there are absolutely lots of amazing rescues and organizations all over the country, but I am choosing to support APA! with this fundraiser not only because they’re local to me, but also because my last three furry kids are APA! alumni and I am eternally grateful to have them brightening my days and my heart. That couldn’t happen without APA!- especially when it came to my first APA! rescue Raven,  a near-feral FeLVie who, with much patience, time, and love became the sweetest and most affectionate kitty I’ve ever had. We lost her to cancer years ago and I’ll be streaming my part in memory of her- but without APA! I’d have never been able to have her in my life at all as most FeLV kitties are immediately euthanized. Over the years since I first found out about APA! I have seen first-hand the inspiring and hard work they consistently do to help animals- here’s a little bit more about them…

Austin Pets Alive! began in 1997 as an animal advocacy group and became a registered 501©(3) rescue organization in 2008. Before that point, 50% of the animals who entered Austin's open-intake, government-run shelter didn't leave the shelter alive. Sadly, this is still happening at shelters across the nation, and Texas is considered to be the worst state for shelter pets because over 50,000 cats and dogs are being killed annually. However, thanks to the APA!’s hard work and innovative life-saving solutions, by 2011 all of Austin became a no-kill city, saving over 90% of homeless animals. In 2021 APA! Celebrated their 10-year anniversary of being the country’s largest No-Kill city and as of February 2022, they celebrated an even bigger milestone- over 100,000 animal lives saved!

In addition to their activities here in Texas, they also have American Pets Alive! (AmPA!) ,  the national arm of APA! which focuses on helping shelters implement their best practices in order to achieve No Kill in their own communities. In 2021 alone, AmPA! provided support to more than 150 shelters across the United States. You can learn more about APA! And their amazing history and timeline of life-saving efforts here: https://www.austinpetsalive.org/about/our-story

WHY SPECIFICALLY THE MEDICAL TRIAGE AND WELLNESS CLINIC?

You may be wondering why I specifically want to raise funds for the medical clinic versus just for the rescue as a whole. For me personally, what really sets APA! aside is that focus and drive to not just care for and rehome homeless animals, but to literally save lives. A huge part of that life-saving effort is APA!’s Medical Triage and Wellness Clinic- the hub of medical care and emergency efforts for the animals who come into APA!’s care. The Medical Triage and Wellness Clinic touches and evaluates every animal that APA! takes in, providing everything from standard health exams and routine care to surgical and emergency intervention to save urgently endangered lives. In 2021 alone, the Medical Triage and Wellness Clinic had 2,760 medical intakes, 36,847 examinations, and performed 6,758 surgeries. Animals who require specialized care outside the clinic’s capabilities (such as cardiology, etc.) are treated and maintained until APA! has raised enough funds to send them to a specialist for care. These are just some of the basics about their clinic, but you can learn more here:  https://www.austinpetsalive.org/programs/medical-triage-wellness-clinic

We're working on getting some additional goodies for the stream so you definitely won't wanna miss it!

Also I strongly encourage you to exploit dress up your furry (or scaly/feathered/etc) babies for free stuff and enter them into the best dressed pet contest!! Of course if you win you'll be obligated to get them some tasty treats but that sounds like a fair price to pay for tanks. With the added bonus of providing you with cute photos for the holiday cards this year :)
