Last I heard, they're just moving them to Ft Benning, they'll be outside, there, as well. I doubt the elements will be any kinder to them there.

In railfan terms, we call that kind of "static" display of historical equipment to be "Stuffed and Mounted."  Basically meaning cosmetic restorations.  It's not something any equipment fan wants to see, since static displays rarely get the care and upkeep they need.

When did they get those thick mattresses ? Damn when I went through there they had those 4 inch crapola shoved with sawdust things.. or at least they felt that way.

Brings back many many memories.

World War II barracks were my home during basic, was there in the winter time, talk about freezing your ass off!!

My best memories of Knox...don't laugh...was the mess hall....had some of the best food anyone could ever want.

Good times and bad times there. Did my M1A1 tank training with the Marines there is 2005, they had already started clearing out some of the pads I thought. Seeing all those tanks, sends a little bit of pride and motivation up your spine doesn't it? Semper Fi

I went to OSUT at Ft Knox, C-4-1, in the autumn of 82, graduated right before x-mas leave for everyone else. Our barracks was right near the tank trail to Holder Complex, and we got to be quite proficient at distinguishing the various engine sounds of the vehicles that drove by. The first time an M1 drove by we were surprised by how quiet it was.

I remember the reception hall with all the divisional patches on the walls, ie "Stripes". I, too, sweated my ass off on Agony, Misery & Heartbreak. Its funny, I seem to remember always going up those hills, never remember going down.

I later ran into a guy who went to basic at Knox when they were filming Stripes, he was an extra in the graduation scene.

I remember Knox, Disney, and Holder along with Misery, Agony and Heartache. Summer of 80 (Iran Crises) I was in B-5C-1 1st platoon the best platoon, hard gun drill sergeant, drive on, drive on. 19D Armored Reconnaissance Specialist that what it says on my diploma, not Cavalry Scout. When I came in we had Black boots, OD green cotton fatigues, steel pots and Khakis.

I can't believe that drill field is gone... Makes me tear up a little.  Once upon a million years ago I had to mow that stupid field with a pushmower while sitting in the reception detachment while my orders were amended sending me off to another school instead of on to permanent assignment after Basic/AIT...

I went there coming home from vacation to check out the tanks. Wow, was I disappointed. The best tank was on static display in the town; they had an M103.

A 2/81 Armor for OSUT back in Jan-May 2000. After that, B 1/12th Cav in Ft Hood, then D 2/72 AR in Korea. They're going to wish they hadn't relegated the tank to second class if they ever meet a competent foe.

Foxtrot 2/46 for Basic in 2006. I think I've got some Patton Museum pictures on my fb, I'll have to rummage around.

Yep. Sad is right. I still plan on stopping by, one of these days. It'll probably hurt.
