I tried to download and use a tank skin but the image was all wonkey.

How do I make this work??
I'm a bit of a computard so any help would be greatly received.

RAR means that it's packed. Instead of downloading seperate files, you downloaded a single package with the files put in. See it like a gocery bag with all your groceries in: having a grocery bag or box will allow you to carry 4 days worth of food and drink in a single hand. Same thing also goes for computer files.
What you need is to unpack the files from the RAR file. You could use WinRAR for this. It's easy to find with google and easy to install.
Are you familiar with drag-and-drop? Just open the RAR file with WinRAR and drag-and-drop the files contained in the RAR into the correct folder.
You might want to rename or copy the original skin files first so you don't lose them.

What he means is that in-game camo is an extra layer over the base skin of every tank.
If you install skins, you change the basic coloring. The bottom layer. Not just for your own tank, but every tank of that type will look like that on your screen. In-game camo layers over that. Some times it works, some times it's just plain ugly.
