The KV-5 is one of the most underrated tanks in the game, mainly due bad players, its unique playstyle and how its weakspot is very easy to see and hit in the hands of an inexperienced player (As the tank stands now, it is one of the worse tanks in-game, and I believe that it is because of its gun. I think that it needs a buff for its gun for that then penetration becomes near to 200 like the 105mm of a T32, but the accuracy or RoF can be nerfed). This thread is for the discussion of the KV-5, the most underrated (and the worse played) tank in the game. If there is a term you do not understand, read on or refer to the list of terms near the end of this post. If you still do not understand something, please PM me or ask it in this thread. EDIT:I will be hiding everything in a spoiler to make it easier to find out where things are. #2 edit: most things are only current for 7.1, and with 7.2, I will need to fix and update a lot of the things inside (8RPM is for max crew, etc.)
The gun:
The gun is both its weakness and its strength. Most of the people who look at the KV-5 first check the gun out, which is not that impressive, being a mere tier 7 gun on a tier 8 tank. It also has bad penetration for its tier. However, the gun has the ability to fire 8 RPM (Rounds Per Minute) when it has a 100% crew. You can increase this by adding rammers, vents and so on. This allows you to easily kill those pesky Type 59s by simply shooting at their weakspots (Their tracks are the easiest and the most obvious targets, but the cupolas on top of the turret are also weakspots) The penetration is good enough for you to destroy any tank below tier 8, and some other tier 8s.
The armor:
The armor of a KV-5 is actually quite good, with the sole exception of the R2-D2 at the front of the tank. When angled right, this tank can easily bounce shots from all lower tier tanks, and it can quite often simply take their shots. With the new change to HE mechanics, lower tier tanks can hurt you even less now, making your role as a "bully" tank even easier. A spall liner is a must for this tank, as the easiest target is the turret, but because of how tough it is, few tanks can penetrate the armor and most tanks resort to HE, which you can still bounce.
The speed/agility (Yes, it actually does have speed):
The speed/agility of this tank is quite good for a heavy tank, with the ability to solo a lot of lower tier tanks. It has a faster speed than the Lowe, and it is also one of the heaviest tanks in-game at 100 tons (Because I use a spall liner for mine, and other equipment, the tank is even heavier than its stated weight). It's max speed is 40 km/h, and this means that while its speed going uphill is average-slow, its speed going downhill is very good for one of its main weapons, ramming. Ramming enemy tanks is a very good tactic in this tank due to how they cannot reverse and escape your tank that is going at 40 km/h. Ramming an enemy tank can do up to 400 damage at full speed, and that is essentially one shell that you do not have to shoot at that tank and you can use that shell to shoot at another tank! (Remember to track the enemy before you attempt to ram! )
So, having read through half a page of how the KV-5 works, I will now give you a guide on how to use it.
When you are top tank:
Spoiler
There is literally only 1-4 tanks that you will need to fear and treat with respect, but know this: You can still kill them! So never attempt to run away from the fight unless you see another tier 8, and even then you only need to fear another tier 8 with its front pointing towards you. However, this does not mean that this tank is invulnerable. A mass of tier 7s can still destroy your KV-5, so always make sure you have some tier 5/6s around you as good cannon fodder and/or support .
In this tank, your best option is to attempt to flank at all costs, as your gun cannot do much to the front armor of other tier 8s (mediums excluded, but there is a different method to dealing with them).
If the enemy tier 8 ignores you, you can take advantage of your 8 rounds per minute and simply out shoot them. If they show their front towards you and target you, then your allies can take the tier 8 down by shooting at its weak side armor. The only exception to this tactic is another KV-5 and tier 8 medium tanks.
Fighting against tier 8s:
This section of the guide will tell you how to deal with the other tier 8s that you may encounter. I will be using the term "threat" a lot in this thread, and by "threat" I am meaning that the said tank is hard to kill from the front, at long range, etc.
First of all, tier 8 heavies:
Spoiler
Normal Heavies:
IS-3s are a threat to you due to their high penetration gun and how they also like brawling, but there is a way to defeat them if you are soloing them. First of all, immobilising them is something that will help a lot. My tactic on defeating them still needs some work before I can call it a tried and tested way of killing them, but immobilising them is a very helpful part of it. It can work without immobilising them, but a smart IS-3 driver always keeps moving, and so should you, which makes my tactic more of a lucky shot. I target the top part of the hull if we both are on level ground, there is no one supporting the IS-3 and it is immobilised/tracked.
The 107mm that is on the KV-5 can penetrate the upper hull of them IS-3, but you need to get into the right angle in order to be able to penetrate. The only thing that matters is how the shell hits the IS-3, and so your gun/turret/tank should be a bit to the frontal left/right of the IS-3, which should negate the bonuses of its angle and its slope(your height negates their slope). If it bounces/the IS-3 tries to facehug you, you can try driving past and shooting at the sides of the IS-3, or aiming and shooting at the cupolas. If you find them at corners at buildings, try to make them attack first. If you attack first, they can shoot at your nice R2-D2 while you bounce your shots due to how they move. By letting/making them attack first, you force them to expose their nice weak side armor which is easily penetrated with your gun, and if they hit and penetrate you, you have the most hp of all tier 8s, so it doesn't matter! To summarise: When fighting an IS-3 1v1 in an alley or something, you can: charge forward, facehug and shoot down into their cupolas/top armor. You can also start a shootout by staying there and shooting at their lower glacis. Shooting the angled front/side of the IS-3 can work, but current testing doesn't seem to show that it is THAT easy to penetrate (i.e. getting a good angle)
T32s are also a threat, mainly due to how your gun can't really penetrate their frontal armor (their lower hull can be penetrated, but it is quite annoying/lethal to see all of your shots bounce at close range). If you see them in cities, or if they are around the corner of a building, try to hit their tracks and flank them. Shooting them from the front and penetrating is very hard due to how they all have their instinctive face-hugging tactic which can and WILL kill you. Aiming for the cupolas is not an option due to how it is also quite tough, and if you get facehugged by a T32, aim for something else, call for help, or if you are alone, have no support and no other targets then load HE up and hope that you survive. If you can get their sides, then you should be alright (unless arty and whatnot kill you). I will need further testing on how to kill them, but what I have just written are my general tactics when fighting them. Also, a T32 only has 1400 hp with stock turret.
KTs are a big threat due to how the only thing that you can hit and reliably penetrate are the turret, or if it is upgraded, its cupolas. When facing one of these tanks in close quarters, I recommend shooting at their tracks and then flanking them, unless they have the stock turret. The 107 cannot reliably penetrate the lower glacis of the KT, which means unless you are at a good angle, the KT will win at close range if you decide to simply start a punchout. However, near the tracks, at the lower glacis, there is a strip of metal/armor that seems to be easily penetrated (You can test this, because I probably will not be able to). Another weakness to aim for is their MG port that is in the hull and is weaker. In order to see if they have the stock turret, go to the menu, click on settings (in WoT of course!), and go to the last tab (can't remember what it is called right now). You can change the % bar that floats above each tank to instead show damage with numbers. The KT has 1500 hp with stock turret (Turret is also not high and is wider than upgraded one).
The VK4502A is a tank that is easy to kill in a KV-5. If they decide to start a shootout, you can use your higher hp to sit there and shoot (and penetrate) the MG port in their hull. Another good target is their cupolas, just like a KT. I recommend getting close so that the bad accuracy of the 107 cannot screw you over.
Premium Heavies:
When fighting against another KV-5, try to make sure that they cannot hit your own R2-D2, and target their own R2-D2. If you cannot hit their R2-D2, then you can aim for the cupolas up at the top of the turret. If you are at a moderate range (50-150m away from each other) then turning your side slightly and hiding your R2D2 can help you kill them while taking no damage. If they decide to make the mistake of turning their frontal armor towards you, then just aim at their R2-D2 and fire away! If there are flankers, attempt to fall back and kill the flankers before re-engaging the other KV-5. The other KV-5 can only easily penetrate you if you let your R2-D2 be hittable, so hide it as best as you can!
Lowes are only a threat at long range, due to how they can snipe you all they want and you will bounce off their armor if the frontal part is facing you. If they have only turned their turret to shoot you, and you can hit the side of their hull, then you can reliably penetrate the hull. At close range, if the Lowe is alone, then you can easily kill them. You can penetrate their lower glacis reliably, and their cupola on the top of the turret is penetrable, but moving back a bit a shooting at the upper hull works for me (all normal AP rounds). The side of their turret is another good target too. If you need help, track and attack! Unless you are outnumbered and don't think you can kill the other tanks. I personally always charge out if I am top tank, because I be craaaazy!
T34s are tanks that you should at least keep a bit of distance between you and them, mainly because of how they don't need to hit the R2-D2 to penetrate your armor, whereas you WILL need to aim at weakspots. Tracking them and flanking them are reliable methods of killing them, but the lower glacis is penetrable. The upper hull area for me is a bit annoying (I personally bounce a lot, but also sometimes penetrate) but it is also a potential target, though not one I recommend. The side of a T34s turret, if you hit it in the right spot, is another good target. Otherwise, try not to rush towards a skilled T34 driver, as they can easily destroy you without taking much damage. The cupolas, if you ever find yourself in a bad situation with a facehugging T34, are another target.
And that concludes the how to kill heavy tank section of tier 8s! Any hints, tips etc. that you've found would be nice.
Tier 8 mediums:
Spoiler
I consider medium tanks to be good and easy prey to kill in my KV-5 due to how I get a gun that fires fast, I have more hp, they can't really damage me, and how they're easy to track.
The T-44 is a tank that can't really hurt you, but if you let them get a good angle at your hull, then they can penetrate. When fighting this tank, I just autoaim, look somewhere else, click, look back. I do this because autoaim aims at the part where the T-44 turret meets the hull, and there is a high chance of penetrating. By look somewhere else, I mean as in check the minimap to see what I will need to do after I kill the T-44 (e.g. go to base, push, help someone, etc.). I do not fear this tank due to how the turret is quite easy to penetrate, and how the only thing it can really penetrate is the R2-D2. However, it can still damage you so you should be careful. Ramming, and then shooting through the upper armour of their turret/tank is a good tactic, and one that I always try to use. But the hulls of a T-44 are also relatively weak, so you can shoot at their lower glacis if you wish to snipe.
The Type 59 is a tank that is only annoying/dangerous when they decide to band together in a huge pack, or when they decide that blocking your way forward is fun. At long range, just aim for the hull or the side/rear of their turret, and you should penetrate. At close range, if they decide to facehug you, you can aim for their cupolas (circle thingys on top of turret), or track and flank. Due to how you both roughly deal the same DPM, you should come out top with how you have more hp. However, the RNG can still screw you over in a fight with a Type 59, so 1v1 you must try to facehug them, ram them, and shoot at their cupolas. Even moving back a little bit and then ramming them can do roughly 30-60 damage. This may not seem like a lot, but while reloading, you get all the time you need to ram them...
The Pershing is a tank that I personally see is like a bigger Chaffee. It's fast, has weak armor, doesn't bounce shots well, great brawler, etc. This tank is only a threat if it manages to keep hitting your R2-D2, but since you can reliably penetrate its armor at close and long range, it should be of little threat. If you find them hard to kill, just track them then kill.
The Panther II is a tank that is only a threat to you at long range due to how it gets a more accurate gun, it can reliably penetrate your armor and how it has a high chance of bouncing your shots at range. At close range, you can reliably penetrate its armor. I will be doing some testing to see if the turret is a good target, but I believe that the hull is weaker and a better target.
The Lorraine is a tank to fear, as it can easily kill you at close range (350x6=2100, which is more than enough damage to kill your KV-5 quickly). However, to me, this only means that one needs to simply get some other poor person to take the wrath of the Lorraine! French tanks in general should only be taken in a pack/with another French tank.
And so the "How to kill tier 8 medium tanks" section is done!
Tier 8 Tank Destroyers:
Spoiler
TDs are one of the biggest threats that you can face on the battlefield, and the tier 8+ TDs can easily kill you due to: high penetration guns, high damage guns, high RoF guns, better armor than you, some are more agile, etc. If you see a TD at long range, and there is no cover for you to try sneaking up to them, I recommend trying to find a different path. The only thing that you can normally do is to track the TD and then flank them.
The Ferdinand (Tier 8 German TD) is a tank that I would consider annoying to fight against, and dangerous at long range. At close range, in the lower hull, there are machinegun ports, view ports, etc that are weaker and penetrable. However, the headlights of the Ferdinand is a weakness that is easily penned with your gun. The headlights are located near the tracks (just above the tracks, to the left and right of the lower hull) . If you cannot hit its weakspots, then track and flank.
The T28 (Tier 8 American TD) is a tank that is EXTREMELY dangerous due to how even at close range, the only weaknesses that you can target are its cupolas. Whenever you face this tank at close range, attempt to flank no matter what or fall back. At long range, load up HE and shoot while moving forward/pushing. Tracking and flanking is how I deal with this type of tank.
The ISU-152 is a tank that I make sure has fired its gun before I rush out due to how it is also dangerous due to how it can get the BL-10, but when they fire, I get a window where I can fire 2 shells or so before they are loaded. This tank can't really bounce shots, but it is fast and can 2 shot your KV-5, so treat with respect and try not to get shot by it. However, you only need 3-4 shots to kill it.
T28 Prototype: This type of tank I personally have not yet been able to fight in my KV-5 yet. However, from what I have seen of this tank, here are some tips and things for you. The lower glacis of the T28 is a potentially good target, even though it is pretty small. HE is something that is pretty useful (as it is an open-topped tank), but as one of my friends who have it put "It's just like a slower, tougher and faster firing T34!". So tracking this tank and flanking should be possible.
TDs are done, don't think people need help on how to deal with the tier 8 arty, so this concludes the section of killing tier 8s!
Sneaky tips and tricks to use in a KV-5:
1) Due to how easy it is to hit the R2-D2, I sometimes drive backwards towards the enemy and use the exhaust to try and ruin their aim. However, I only do this in close areas, like when the enemy has surrounded me or stuff like that. Driving backwards towards the enemy when they are far away is pointless and dangerous. I always try to make sure that the rear armor is not showing that much, or that it is angled away from their gun. This tactic, with the nerf to the KV-5s rear armor in 7.2 (or something), means that it isn't that good. Angling/presenting the side armor is now better, but moving backwards and ramming an enemy (especially if it is a french light tank) can pin it and do damage to it.
2) Pressing alt or zooming your view out to the max and then moving it are 2 ways of seeing what the enemy tanks are. By zooming your view out to the max, it also allows you to see what the enemy tanks are doing (I may post a screenshot of this, maybe not. It's part of how I do well! ).
3) Ramming is the best thing to do in the KV-5, and don't hesitate to track the enemy tank then ram them!
4) Charging out into the mass of enemy tanks is fun, suicidal, and amusing if you survive. However, charging out only works if there is not a mass of enemy tanks on the other side, and if they are not on higher tiers than you, else you will die too quickly. If it is a mass of tier 5/6s, it's your lucky day!
5) If a tier 5-6 tank gets behind you, then kill it while angling your rear turret armor and the body of your tank. The angles on the KV-5 are very weird, and may cause more than one shot to bounce as they hit the edge of an armor plate.
When there are tier 9s:
In these types of matches, you need to be more cautious than in a match where you are top tank, because if you encounter a tier 9, you can't really do much. Whenever you find a tier 9, try your best to get away and let arty or a friendly tier 9 take care of the enemy tier 9.
Beginning of Tier 9 killing guide:
Tier 9 Heavies:
Spoiler
The E-75 is a tank that you should fear in your KV-5, since it is near invulnerable from the front unless you use gold rounds. I usually track them, then flank them. However, I do this knowing that there is little-no chance of my surviving the encounter if I am alone. 1v1, the E-75 will win. 2v1, you MIGHT survive if your helper is good enough to kill the E-75.
The cupola is the only weakspot that you can reliably hit. However, it is NOT something that you can reliably penetrate, which is annoying. I recommend using HE and flanking, because that is the only way that you will be able to penetrate it. However, the side armor of the turret is weak enough for you to reliably penetrate it. The lower glacis has too much armor for you to penetrate it, however I have had some lucky shots with AP at the armor near and next to the tracks.
The IS-4 is another tank that is hard to kill in a KV-5. In theory, an AP shell should be able to go through the front armor, however I have not yet managed to get it to work. My method of dealing with IS-4s is to try and get to close range, ram them (facehug anyone?) so that I can shoot down through the top armor of their tank. If they are too far away, I fire a HE shot at them and try to lure them to come to me. The side armor of an IS-4 is also deceptively strong, due to the spaced armor that they have. I aim for the rear of the tank (near the fuel tanks) if I see it side on to me.
M103 is hard to kill, mainly because the hull is pretty bouncy. Tracking it and flanking it is a good tactic, but the main weaknesses on a M103 are: the cupola, the lower glacis and the sides. Ramming this tank is also a good tactic, as you can facehug it and shoot through their top armor. However, it can also fire pretty fast (I had one, and yes, it can easily slice through your armor), so make sure that it is either already weakened or it has the stock turret (use method mentioned above near KT killing guide).
The VK4502 (P) is relatively easy to kill for me, because of how the side armor is easily penetrated, and since you are also faster than them, as long as you can start circling them 1v1, you should be able to win or cause a lot of damage to the VK4502 (P) (and get a lot of credits ) However, if you cannot get around to their nice side armor, retreat! Don't waste your tank, for the front armor is near invulnerable to your gun! The machinegun port MAY be a weakness, but I haven't tried it yet.
French tanks you should always attempt to ram while reloading (moving backwards, moving forwards and hitting French tank, etc.) because of how you will do a little bit of damage to the enemy tank, whereas they will not be able to do any damage to you if they ram you. However, you should only get up close if you know/think you can take on the damage that the French tank will inflict on you.
Tier 9 Mediums:
Spoiler
For the T-54, just do the same as though it were a Type 59 (even though Type 59s are T-54s...). However, they can: reliably penetrate your armor at close range, and the lower glacis is no longer a target (or whatever).
For a Patton, because it can do more DPM than you, try not to get into a brawl with one. It can and will beat you at sniping, brawling and dodging shots. If you see a Patton, ramming into it to hold it in place while you shoot at their vulnerable top turret armor is a good tactic.
E-50 is a tank! Now someone make a post about this section!
When there are tier 10s:
In matches with tier 10s, do the same as what I recommend done in tier 9 matches, but if you see a tier 10, you need to: run away from, flank or ram the tier 10, depending on your surroundings and the tier 10 you see. FYI, a KV-5 on its own CANNOT get into a battle with tier 10s due to its better mm value.
How to deal with wolfpacks of mediums:
Spoiler
Whenever you see these, attempt to get your team to turtle up, as the main advantage of a wolfpack is its speed, and how they can all circle you and split/bounce the damage. There will be a few people who choose to go out unsupported, and these people can be the bait. When the mediums come, and they WILL come, there is a high chance that they will "take the bait" and get behind the poor tank that chose to go out. Believe it or not, this is actually a good thing, as by getting behind the bait, they expose the weaker side and rear armor of their tanks (The rear of the turret is still a good place to shoot, so fire away!) When you finish destroying the wolfpack, move up or go to the last place an enemy tank was seen.
How to deal with them solo!
If you are alone, and need to fight off 3-5 mediums of a lower tier than you, you can still win it! I personally love fighting like that (setting the odds against me ) and here are my tips on how to win it solo:
1) Focus your fire on the one that can damage you easily! I determine my list by this order: Tanks that can easily penetrate my armor, tanks with "derp" guns, tanks with high fire rates, and then the rest.
2) Angle your armor whenever possible against them all i.e. keep moving/wriggling your tank while shooting (I use a vert stab to help me with shooting while moving)
3) Stay confident. Don't ever start thinking like you can't win it, for battles are won in minds and hearts, not only on battlefields.
Some tips for the KV-5:
Spoiler
1) Use hitbox skins if you are new, not so good or don't know where the weakspots of an enemy tank are because you WILL need it.
2) Try to stick with the pack, or take cover at rocks where the enemy need to cross open ground to reach you.
3) If you find yourself alone, you can still win! Never surrender, and if your gun is destroyed, ram the enemy tanks!
4) This tank is one of the best tanks for ramming, and always try to ram lower tier tanks because who isn't scared at 100 tons of steel coming towards them at 40 km/h? You can also one-hit ram tier 5s.
5) Tanks that you should not ram are: E-100s, Maus's and T95s due to their higher weight, tougher armor, or severely higher armor.

Conclusion!:
The KV-5, priced at 7500 gold (or roughly 35 dollars) is actually a hidden bargain that the WoT devs do not want you to know about! Even the wiki contributors have tried to get people to ignore this tank with its "bad gun". (I'm just kidding ) The KV-5 is an exotic beast, with a different strategy that most people can't use/understand. Remember, NOTHING can take on your tank when you are rushing towards them downhill. This tank also has one advantage over the Type 59: Both are tier 8 premium tanks, both make a lot of credits, both are fun to use, but the KV-5 as a USSR premium tank allows you to train your KV crews in it, whereas the Type 59 as of time of writing has no other Chinese tank for it to train crews for. If you like heavy tanks that can take a beating, shoot a lot and love to ram things, then this tank is the one for you!
Meaning of some terms used in this thread:
Spoiler
Mod = Modification (used here to refer to a modification of the client files)
KT = King Tiger, Tier 8 German heavy and widely considered to be the best tier 8
R2-D2 = The larger dome in front of the KV-5
Hitbox skins = A mod to the ingame files that show you the weakspots of enemy tanks
OP = Over Powered (Essentially, it means that the tank/avatar/object is too good, and should be changed/everyone should use it because it is good)
Cupolas = Circular things that stick out of the top of turrets.
Arty = Artillery/SPGs
Modules, consumables and shell loadout:
For modules, I use a Large Spall Liner to reduce the HE damage that I take from arty, a Vertical Stabilizer Mk 2 to make my shots more accurate against enemy tanks and a Large Shell Rammer to fire faster.
For consumables, I use a small repair kit for broken guns/ammo racks, a small first aid kit for dead gunners/loaders, and a fire extinguisher for pesky fires.
For my Shell load out, I use 52 AP shells and 8 HE shells. Remember, if you encounter something you are not sure that you can kill, shoot their tracks out and let arty take care of them.
Out of date stuff:
Spoiler
I had created this thread due to the plague of Type 59s that have appeared on the battlefield, and please do not discuss about how the Type 59 is/is not OP, because the new players now buy Type 59s to see whether or not it actually is OP
Spoiler
The Type 59 was removed from the store on January 16th, so what I had written is now outdated.
. I myself fell into the trap of "OMG I WANTS OP TANK!!!" with the T-54 . I grinded a lot to get the tank after the release of WoT, and yet found out how average the tank is. Even though there were people saying that the T-54 isn't OP, I still got the T-54 to see whether or not it was actually OP or not. New players will probably feel the same so please, if you can avoid it, don't say the Type 59 is OP, say the <insert tank that you love here> is better!
Spoiler
Why you should buy the KV-5 over the Type 59:
1) It, unlike the Type 59, will not be getting a change to its matchmaking value or if it is getting changed, you can still survive compared to the Type 59, which can easily die due to 5 ammo racks and how it has less hp than the KV-5.
2) The KV-5 can get one last kill by ramming a 10% enemy tank just before dying compared to the Type 59, which is too slow, light and small to get a kill through ramming.
3) When you try to ram something in the Type 59, no one will retreat due to how little damage you can do, whereas they WILL regret it if you manage to ram them in your KV-5.
4) The KV-5 looks unique compared to the Type 59, which is just a copy of the T-54.

people buy the T59 over the KV5 because simply put the KV5 sucks compared to the other tier 8 prem
prem tanks are all about making credits, and the lowe AND the T59 are both MUCH better at that, while when the KV5 came out noboby knew how to kill them, but now EVERYONE knows, they are easy to kill as any tank
if you want a heavy prem tank you buy the Lowe
if you want a fun prem tank you buy the T59
if you want to pretty much waste 7500 gold and be angry you buy the KV5
i will however +1 you for the time and effort you put in, and this guide IS helpful for those people that DO have/buy a KV5
> When there are tier 10s:
> In matches with tier 10s, do the same as what I recommend done in tier 9 matches, but if you see a tier 10, you need to run away from, flank or ram > the tier 10, depending on your surroundings.
Has something changed in the match making in 7.0 that KV-5s get put in tier 10 matches? KV-5 was not supposed to be in tier 10 matches, thats one of it's advantages over the Lowe.
The kv5 is about a worthless tank for fighting. It seems to be good with xp and money but it should also be a fun tank to play with and its not. If those of us who spend real hardearned money on this game we should be getting gold tanks that are better than silver tanks. The kv5 isn't a good silver tank and is definitely not worth the 30dollars in gold that it cost to buy. The armour seems to be ok not great but ok. The ammo sucks as I may as well throw rocks. And its speed is horrendous. Am curious to hear what WOT will do about this tank. The only time the kv5 does well is if you get lucky and run against tier 6 or lower tanks. Then and only then do you have any chance of actually surviving and maybe hurting something.

Any skilled player would laugh at you, really.
It'll carry its weight against tier 8 opponents perfectly fine as long as you well, aim for certain spots. Anything above, you'll need to either hit a copula, flank or as the poster before you said, ram.
1200 horsepower behind 100 tons is no joke. Accelerating to 40 is faster than you think. Hell, a well-played KV-5 will eat a Lowe in most mid-close combat situations, given its faster reload and higher damage gun. Just start aiming and you'll do fine in it.
Now that I have read your how to use a kv5 report I will try the ramming plan. All the other stuff I am already using but the rounds never seem to penetrate much. Case in point I was in a one on one fight with a pershing I shot him every possible spot and couldnt damage him at all he ended up killing me although it took him a lot of shots but I couldnt ever hurt him. My shots didnt bounce off the just never caused any damage, not even at point blank. Not sure why the gun is so crappy on my kv5 as it should have better pen power. Am interested in your thoughts on this.
Someone in the garage chat told me that KV-5, with spall liner included, is a beast when it comes to ramming. Would that be one of you contributors to this thread?
In my opinion, the KV-5 is so heavy, a Spall Liner would be redundant; its not like there's many tanks that will match your weight when it comes to ramming.
The gun sacrifices penetration for good alpha with reload speed, or at least that was how it is to me. I've never had much of an issue against US tanks as, long as you can shoot the hull. Facehugging and going for the copula generally works if its an option as well.
Good guide, but the weak gun and the R2D2 will keep me from this tank. I would like to have it use for crew training, but can't get past it's weaknesses.
Recently bought the KV-5 and am pretty pleased with it. You can certainly do things to keep your R2D2 from getting hit every round and some ppl just don't have a clue. Still getting used to it and after the first handful of matches I was starting to have buyers remorse, but now pretty pleased with it. Only have about 20 games under belt in this behemoth and best game so far has ben about 80k credits without premium. So far its only the Tier 9s that I have a problem with, definately screwed if it is one on one. American Tier 9 not as much of a problem though.
If your shots bounce, make sure that you are aiming for the hull of enemy tanks, and that your shots actually are going to where you want them to. Ramming is probably the best weapon that this tank has, as being able to one-hit ram tier 6s is quite fun
The R2-D2 can be hidden be putting your hull behind some kind of rock or a wreck. Tanks that are good to put your R2-D2 behind are: russian mediums, all tier 5-6s, TDs, and some heavies (The KV-5 is so big, it can easily shoot above the wrecks of tanks).
With enough games people can learn how to play this tank effectively. It is essentially for those matches where you are near the top and the priority targets are all the little guys, not the other big tanks.
The R2D2 is something which can be an issue, but at long range it isn't the issue, it is the issue in brawling with multiple enemies, try and take enemy tanks on one at a time if possible and the R2D2 will be less of a threat. Also, peeking out behind buildings (try and be on the left of the building and fire to the right so as to protect the R2D2 and angle it as much as possible) is effective because they will try to shoot at the R2D2, and generally they will miss and bounce like crazy on the main armor.
Remember, play the KV5 like an IS-4 and it will have very forgiving armor. Play the tank like a German tank and you will be dead.

Sorry kinda off topic but what do you mean crew training. Don't you have to train your crew to use this tank?
Tier eight premiums earnings.
lowe. Highest
KV5 - second
Type59 ( as of version 7.0tierplacement ) third.
Fact - Jack.
We use Type59 for fun and credits at same time, most players I know do not find The lowe or KV5 " Fun " .
Players learn how to kill every tank, just as players learn to use tanks to best advantage and position to hide weakspots ..in a tier ten match I was hit 46 times had 2 kills - steel wall and 87k profit after repairs. , consumables ammo.
Take a Type59 into a match suicide it doing no damage.
Take a KV5 and do the same.
Do math.
KV5 makes creds for now at higher rate per match.
I ground the tank to death chasing credits ..being an idiot at the time and only thinking of grinding I would kamikaze any map or MM I didn't care for ..now my win % is in the crapper ..but I made tons of credits ..
but guess what ..I am sure guys who had me in team would have appreciated if I fought my tank ..
Thankfully someone sent a pm suggesting I pull my head out my ass and man up and play ..
Sometimes a good wake-up is in order ..pointing out winning pays more helped also.
This is for 7500 gold a bargain.
Now that Type59 will get tiered up and a cred boost it may have the same earning potential.
Sorry kinda off topic but what do you mean crew training. Don't you have to train your crew to use this tank?
Premium tanks are good training up crews for other tanks. As long as the crew is trained to the same type as a premium tank (Still have to be same nationality), they can be used on that tank without penalty. So when you get a crew for a KV-3 or such, you can simply send some of the crew to fill out the KV-5 positions and get them trained up. Then transfer them back to the KV-3 without needing to retraining the crew *at* all.
