Hmm, there is no "Application Data" folder beneath my username on my Win XP SP3 machine. I see .m2, Desktop, Favorites, My Documents, Start Menu, Windows and workspace folders.
Also, there is only a single preferences.xml file on my entire hard drive and it belongs to another game.
Any other clues? Thanks!

@mwittman check the box at map settings to show hidden folders and files.
Or just type this in your addres bar: %appdata% (that parameter works on all Windows systems from MS-DOS)

Wait I edit my gamefiles of some games a lot. Like America's Army etc.
But the weird thing is you say this:
"SKY_LIGHT_MAP, shadows from the clouds. 0 - on. 1- off. Default setting - off.
MRT_DEPTH, special rendering with use of depth buffer. 0 - on. 1- off. Might increase fps on new video cards. Default setting - off. Requires client reboot.
SHADER_VERSION_CAP. shader version: 0 - 3, 1 - 2. Default = 0.
TEXTURE_QUALITY. : 0 - max, 1 - medium, 2 - minimal. This setting puts the most strain on the used system and video memories.
TEXTURE_FILTERING. : 0 - anisotropic 16х, 1 - anisotropic 8х, 2 - anisotropic 4х, 3 - anisotropic 2х, 4 - trilinear.
SHADOWS_QUALITY. Quality of tank's shadow: from 0 - max to 3 - no shadows at all.
SHADOWS_COUNT. Number of tank's shadows: from 0 = 32 shadows to 6 = 1 shadow.
TERRAIN_MESH_RESOLUTION. : 0 - high, 1 - medium. 2 - low.

I have read all the thread but i didnt't seem to found what i need. I have the following problem with which i hope you fellows can help me with.
My problem is that i cannot see the units highlighted when i mouseover them on one machine (better one) and on another comp i can see em (a lower performance one). I have an ATI Radeon 1950x graphic card (an older model) while on the lower computer there is an onboard card about the same age. Please help if you know how^^... i have asked before on some thread and i got an answer like "Had this issue and fixed by it's self" i didn't had this luck so far so if anyone had it and fixed it pls tell me what did you do about it.

Another thing related to preferences.xml :
it seems that after the update I can't set the resolution to 800x600, although i played it like that before the update (even with the overlaping text and hud objects) which doesn't work after the update.
I don't mind the quality of 800x600, it really gave me an fps boost, so i'd like to see if there's anyone else experiencing this?

After the update, I can only run the game in 640x480...... on my 32" monitor. WTF?
I tried changing the settings in the preferences.xml... set it to read-only... and it still starts up in 640x480.
The only workaround i've found is to run it in windowed mode... and manually drag the window to fit the screen. What happened in the latest patch? I can't run full screen higher than 640x480, regardless of what the xml file says.

Indeed, this was the problem - I was editing the old preferences.xml

Some of these seem to be in a 'no touchy zone'. Game wont let me join a battle with these edidted.
Just shows me the map-load progress bar and the minimap.
Still fiddling around trying to find wich one are safe to rename.
I really need to get rid of the fire/smoke effects as they choke up my system.
I would like to get rid of the trees as well... stupid trees.
Cant quite understand why we still cant turn the fire/smoke off.
Funny thing though ... i can play the SC2-demo without much trouble...

So, i was intrigued at the possibility to improve my FPS, and ran through some of these including removing clouds. Over all, my FPS did improve, but the thing that REALLY surprised me was finding the moon on multiple maps (Sand river, Lakeville, and a couple others). just my $0.02. kudos

What are you to do if you use XP but don't have the W folder in app settings?
(My client doesn't run or make an error- maybe this is why)

alex - it is there, just search for it. If your preferences.xml is missing WoT will create a new default one.

I can't seem to find the "new" preference.xml file on my PC. Only one in the F:\Games\World_of_Tanks_closed_Beta\res\particles\Tank, and i can't read a word in the file with all those weird wordings.
How do i find the "new" preference.xml or how to convert those weird wordings to english? lol. thanks.
