The T-28 is one of those tanks which everybody seems to know, but nobody ever seems to know much about. I’m going to go over a quick history of the vehicle to fill in a bit of the gap.

The development of T-28 started back in 1931 when an ‘assault tank’ requirement was stated, to have three turrets. As an example of how quick tank development used to be, the prototype was undergoing testing by the end of that year.

Well that explains the seeming randomness of the T-28's tech tree.

Good info as always.

Interesting you didn't mention the Vickers Independent in this article? And gave the T-35 only a passing mention.

Still a good read anyways though. I sure learned a few things.

Didn't seem to need mentioning. Multi-turreted tanks cropped up in the 1920s and varied from the Independent to the A9 Cruiser

This happens to be my favorite tank in the game.  I've got some nice ones (T-50-2, Type 59) and we'll see how I feel about my Panther and my Patton, but the T-28 is fantastic.  I mount the 57mm ZiS-4, crew is 100, and 100 Camo, working on split repair/fire now - Vents, Camo Net, Binocs is the equipment I roll with.  Pure and simple pwnge.

Awesome information, as usual.  Having been a treadhead for many years I find the more obscure tanks to be far more interesting than the mainstream.  I enjoy building scale model kits and will do some searching for the T28... it should be quite a challenge.  Thanks for a very interesting read.

As you said with the su-8 having the gun on the front, the su-8 ingame is based off of early model su-14's like such:

That first one appears to be based off the T-35 chassis

It is indeed, as it is essentially our ingame SU-14 with an open fighting compartment.

Not represented in World of Tanks was the T-28Eh, which was basically the T-28 fitted with additional appliqué armour on the front and sides. This modification came about after experience against Finland in the Winter War. Most of the L-10 equipped tanks were upgraded to this standard.
Actually, when I first began playing World of Tank, the lack of armor upgrades were one of the thing that first surprised me. There were upgrades for guns, suspensions, and even radios. Yet, nothing to represent the additional armor as was often applied to tanks either through chassis upgrades... or more directly through additional plating added to existing chassis via either welding or bolting as was often seen in soviet chassis(ekranami(if I recall the spelling) variants of the T-28, T-25 and KV-1 to just name those as witnesses to such)....
or as commonly found in the german panzers as well and Stug III/IV series(especially the Panzer IV H whose main upgrade was that of the amount of additional armor added through either armored skirts or the aditional bolted/welded(I cannot recall which process) 30mm of plating added to it's 50mm front to bring up the frontal glacis to the more commonly known figure of 80mm. Or the Panzer 3 which was to be upgraded up to 70mm in it's N infantry tank variant iirc.

I was expecting to see such ability to upgrade armor either as a research object akin to the new guns and suspensions(the quote you have do mention such an upgrade in plating for the T-28 was direct experiences of the Finland front which brought the intended changes) or as some purchasable tank upgrade akin to camo nets or binoculars upgrade equipment pieces which could be purchased for credits on "compatible" tanks.
Rather than new tank chassis to actually be researched(since some of these upgrades were applied to pre-existing chassis, rather than being built as such, by bolting or weleding the additional armor plate on existing tanks).

It might not be the best thread to discuss such, but it is something that I did once wish was added into the game, as I felt it could increase the viability and ability to bring otherwise "obsolete" tanks in tiers not expected to be their own... such as the T-28 being showcased here by increasing it's survivability even if at the cost of mobility through the added weight, to further reflect it's historical development throughout the conflicts.

Great article, enjoyed learning about a tank I mostly forgot up on my way to IS-4/IS-7. Didn't know about the different suspensions the Russians tried, pretty cool.
