M12 Gun Question

Panzer4life's Photo Panzer4life Feb 20 2012

So I'm about 15k away from my M12. I absolutely love the M41, and I expect much out of the replacement vehicle starting with the better gun.

But I noticed something: the top 155 on the M12 costs 35000 XP to unlock. This doesn't normally bother me, but I was comparing it to the top gun on the GWPanther and found out that the GWpanther's gun is over half as expensive to unlock.

But there's more: that gun fires faster, is more accurate, and has an amazing level of gun sweep. The M12's gun does do 50 extra damage (negligible) and has a half second aim time, but I think it is safe to say that the GWPanther wins out in firepower as far as the stats are concerned.

So my question is this: am I missing something? Does the M12 have something else going for it like larger blast radius or gun elevation or shell travel time to warrant the huge price jump? As it is this seems a little unfair, considering how the GWPanther is bar none the best chasis you can have for an artillery piece...does it also get a better gun for half the price?

American SPGs usually have lots more ammo

I have played the S-51 and M12. Have not played the GWPanther...

The M12 is probably the worst of the tier 6 arty's, but it is still enjoyable.

As far as the gun goes, its decently accurate. But like many others I asked the same question as you... and more questions... like "what the f*** is the advantage to this Arty?"... and the answer was always the same....

The rest of the Tree....

M40/43... and then the T92.

That is why you're grinding through the M12... The same way I've been and have almost completed... and honestly, its a fun grind IMO.

Good Luck!

I actually understand this. As I said, I really enjoy the M41, and the M40/43 appears to be a better equipped M41.

If as you say, that the M12 has no advantage, then it's not the end of the world to me. I don't see very many reason why ANY of the artillery from tier 5 onward cease to stay competitive excep in some odd situations (soviet artillery running out of ammo, for example), but those are generally annoyances more than problems.

Thanks for the answers

Well, I would just add in that the speed is very decent at 39kmh... unlike the GWPanthers 48kmh.

The upgraded tracks on the M12 give you a traverse speed of 20... unlike the GWPanthers 28...

You will like it, reloads quick, lots of ammo... but yeah... no advantage.

GL dude.

SSo its fairly mobile and has a lot of shells to along around. Sounds good to me! How is.the splash on the upgun? Still in my 41 but only 30k xp to go.

Well, even though this gun is 20k more expensive, you get a gun that is over 200mm about 30k faster on your M43. It takes 35k to unlock the 8 inch gun on it when it takes 65k for the GWT to unlock the 210. The stats on these two are really similar and the M43 is smaller and more mobile.

the only thing bad about the M12, is that it can't use AP

I kinda like the M12;  Its a decent arty and it hits pretty hard when you hit something directly, although the splash isn't very large.  It's one that I will keep after I buy the 40/43.

I use to think that too, till I got the Su-14 with the 203mm. But the M12 does has twice the ROF

What I would say is the biggest advantage (if there is one) is that the M12's aiming circle doesn't get big when you move the hull. I mean it does but not as much as any other arty you might play, which in my mind reduces the aiming time by alot and allows you to switch targets on the map alot quicker and easier. This together with the fast reload make this arty one of my favorite in the american tree.

I enjoy the M12 a lot.  Much more than my S51 and GWP.

Ok, my GWP is stock right now ... and for some reason even with 100% crew and the aiming circle as small as it can get the round always never seems to hit near the middle.

The S51 has a decent splash and damage ... but it reloads and aims so slowly that it is pretty painful, and I don't feel very useful much of the time during the battle because I'm either waiting for a reload, or waiting for aim to finish (reload is so slow, and ammo is so limited, you cannot afford to shoot without fully aiming).

The M12 has a good traverse, decent aim and reload and decent damage, as well as a high ammo count. The primary object of artillery is not to kill (although it can be useful) but to damage enemies enough to tip the scales.  With my M12 I can switch between targets as the come pretty easily, with good accuracy, and reduce enemies to where my allies can finish them off.  The reduced splash (over the S51) makes it easier to drop rounds in a close-range fight without damaging my ally.  nothing like seeing an over-matched ally circling an enemy and suddenly my M12 round drops in and takes the enemy out (or drops hps to a low level, where ally can take them out with 1 hit).

Anyway, I really enjoy my M12, more than I did my M41, and more than the S51 and GWP.  My GWP is painful. I like the turret traverse, but as I said, the stock gun does pathetic damage and is so wildly inaccurate (for some reason) that I almost never come close to hitting what I am aiming at. I'm trying to grind up to the upgraded gun to see if that makes a difference, but it's a tough uphill battle.

The M12 is in fact inferior to the GW:P, but that doesn't mean its not a good arty piece. I honestly thought the M12 was going to suck (after playing through both the SU-14 and S-51 lol), but it really is a good arty piece that can hold its own and help turn the tide of battle if played properly.
