Why do american heavies have so little armor?

maxlee's Photo maxlee Feb 21 2012

The t34 and t30 as we all know have poor armor . In that case why did they give them the hull armor of the t32? Or add spaced armor/ applicque armor? to bring up armor values while still retaining some realism?

What is this blasphemy you call 'armor?' Is it something you can attach to your tank to give it more firepower? If not, I need no such handicap on my American tanks :Smile-izmena:

Armor is for weak-minded fools who do not understand the ways of a true hero of the state. Injury is not something to be avoided - sustaining damage to your vehicle simply proves that you are of true merit and willing to die for the fatherland.

Thus we have taken the liberty of removing all but small portions of armor plating from your tanks, to help you achieve the honor of being wounded / blasted to bits in battle.

On a serious note, those tanks are being moved around soon. T34 will be a T8 premium, T30 will be a T9 TD.

learn to play american heavies....HULL DOWN POSITION i have a t 29 and i dont really care about hull armor...the hull is small, so its harder to shoot at and then i take advantage of the terrain and do hull down position

Can't do aplique, because they never got into service.

And in-case you missed the memo, both are being moved away from the heavy line next month or so.

The thing is, the T29/34/30 were all basically the same tank with different guns designed to go directly against....the king tiger.  Which used the 88L71.

WIth how physics works, it actually had enough armor to do really well against the 88L71 and, at the engagement ranges it was expected to take a KT at, it would have been the superior tank with better penetration (The T5E1 and T53 have sub-par penetration values...by a lot).  The T34 was the superior design, as the 120mm was just the best combination of diameter, precision, and reloading efficiency.

As the strongest tank ever produced in WW2 (KT), the T29/30/34 were actually counters to it -- if they actually were produced.

However, due to this game's wonky physics and crazy prototype/post war tanks, all of a sudden these tanks actually aren't as strong as they would have been in real life in practical combat.

Future tanks for the US line, the M103 and T110, also were both created at a time where the average penetration of guns was approaching 400mm of RHA, so armor all of a sudden became...trivial...plus logistics wanted better transportability and, well, the tanks weren't designed to take shots into the hull and...so on and so forth, the list goes on.

For what it was designed to do, the T29/34/30 would have been fine against Panther tanks, Tiger tanks, King Tigers, and panzer IVs and StuG IIIs...the common tanks of Germany during the war...and for the most part, it would have been fine.

You don't have any armor because YOU ARE A SUPPORT TANK COMRADE. ALL TANKS HAVE ROLE IN ON BATTLEFIELD, INCLUDING T34, NOT ALL TANKS PLAY SAME, JUST LEARN PLAY COMRADE.

Don't worry, next patch we may get heavies with enough armor to bounce long 88 shells. Maybe.

On top of that they are more effective when doing so.

Translation:
Hide like a little girl and let someone else on your team be a martyr and eat the enemy shells for you while you shoot them to pieces.

What's that? the enemy sees you and are pissed off and shooting at you? Well... time for plan B,

ie: RUN like a little girl and find another meat shie- i mean... 'COMRADE' to protect you and absorb more shells from pulverizing your tank into beehive.

your 'COMRADE' will understand that their sacrifice will not be forgotten, we are support tank after all... it's our job to punch tanks full of holes with our mediocre accuracy gun and their job to die.. i mean 'distract' the enemy.

Plan D is to strap radiomen to every visible part of the tank.
